Arlington cold weather shelter opens for December
ARLINGTON — The Arlington cold weather shelter began its December rotation through the community's churches at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on the evening of Dec. 2, but it didn't receive its first guests for the month until the following night, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Dec. 3.
"Sometimes, on the first night that it's open, no one shows up," said Pastor Deena Jones of the Arlington United Church. "They may not know how cold it's supposed to get."
Jones reported that the shelter received seven men and one woman as guests at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on the evening of Dec. 3.
"Now that the freezing temperatures are here, there should be some more showing up," Jones said. "During the cold snap in November, we had as many as 10 guests one night, including a mother and child. It's very unusual for us to have that many so early in the season."
The Arlington cold weather shelter is open from November through March, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., whenever the weather forecasts predict evening temperatures below 32 degrees for at least three hours. On Sunday and Monday nights, it's located at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 1200 E. Fifth St. in Arlington, and on the evenings of Tuesday through Thursday, it's located at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at 615 E. Highland Dr. in Arlington. The Arlington United Church at 338 N. MacLeod Ave. hosts it on Fridays and Saturdays.
"We're getting more volunteers, with the extra exposure, but we could always use more," Jones said.
A light dinner and breakfast are usually served at each shelter location, but the shelter's other rules might vary according to location.
