12 girls win Marysville Soroptimist scholarships

MARYSVILLE – Six students from Marysville-Pilchuck and six from Marysville Getchell won college scholarships from the Marysville Soroptimist Club Tuesday at a breakfast at Fanny’s Restaurant.

Elaine Hansen said out of 34 applicants five are Student of the Month winners and seven are general applicants. Each received $1,500.

Co-president Kathie Roon said for her club, it’s their “favorite morning of the year,” celebrating with the scholarship winners and their families.

Kathy Wilde of the Navy Junior ROTC program said the 12 winners are an “amazing group” of young women and encouraged them to connect with people and help their communities. She told them to go for their dreams and “let your light shine through.”

Marysville School District board president Pete Lundberg said he loves how Soroptimists give back to their community, and being selected as a scholarship winner by them is a high honor for students. He encouraged the winners to be the best they can be and for them to help their communities be the best they can be.

Superintendent Jason Thompson said Soroptimists give back to their community in many different ways and are great role models for the scholarship winners.

City Council president Kamille Norton, whose daughter, Sydney, was one of the scholarship winners, thanked the Soroptimists for all they do in Marysville. She also expects the scholarship winners to go “amazing and fabulous things.” “You all have bright futures,” Roon added.
