MARYSVILLE – Summer is filled with Shakespearean performances, but none are quite like the Red Curtain Foundation’s presentation of M’aQ’betH, a Star Trek-centric adaptation of the Scottish play created by Alex DeRoest and Nick Poling.

DeRoest and Poling are also the creative minds behind “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,” performed recently at Red Curtain.

Performances are weekends July 27-Aug. 12 at the Red Curtain Arts Center, 9315 State Ave. #J.

“M’aQ’betH” takes the Bard’s classic tale of intrigue and tragedy and sets it in the ancient depths of Klingon myth. Emperor Kahless has united the feudal clans of Qo’nos and expelled the Hurq, but after a fateful encounter with three Fek’lhr witches, the vainglorious M’aQ’betH threatens to undo everything the mighty Kahless has built. Forced to commit more and more dishonorable murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take the Alpha Quadrant into the realms of madness and death.

Directed by DeRoest, “M’aQ’betH” features bone-crushing sword-play, eye-popping special effects makeup, and mesmerizing costumes equally inspired by Trek culture and the samurai epics of Akira Kurosawa. Due to graphic violence and adult themes, the play is not recommended for children.

Performances are Friday and Saturday nights at 8 and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors (62+), students and military personnel. Tickets are available online at brownpapertickets.com; at the RCF box office by phone at 360-322-7402; or in-person at the arts center Tuesday-Saturday from 2-6 p.m.
