M-P shocks Meadowdale, advances to Hi-Q finale

Marysville-Pilchuck pulled off a major upset Wednesday to qualify for the Hi-Q finals at Stanwood March 15.

M-P won the match with 20 points, with Meadowdale second with 13 and Lynnwood third with 11.

Meadowdale placed second in the league behind Stanwood during the regular season, and so it hosted the match.

Archbishop Murphy, which was third, hosted a match Tuesday, and that squad also was stunned, this time by Monroe.

So the finale will pit Stanwood against M-P and Monroe.

Citing the low scores, Hi-Q regional director Dave Korkowski said apparently the authors of the questions used took seriously the request to make playoff questions more difficult. M-P grabbed a bonus point in current events but Meadowdale took the lead with a biology answer. The Tommies regained the lead with two literature answers, only to see the Mavericks respond with two math solutions. At the half, Meadowdale led with 12, Marysville had 10 and Lynnwood 2.

For the first three categories of the second half, only M-P could score – a single bonus point in art history. They took the lead again with a quick, answer in the team choice toss-up, a geography question. With only the four-point math toss-up left, and M-P leading by three, the Tomahawks clinched the victory with a correct solution of a partial products problem. Marysville Getchell’s strong ended Tuesday at ATM. ATM was upset by Monroe 17 to 16, with MG just getting nine points. ATM actually filed an appeal, but Monroe won anyway, winning a tiebreaker 3-1.
