M-P student a Senate page

MARYSVILLE – Edgar Martinez, 17, of Marysville-Pilchuck High School served as a page in the Washington state Senate the week of Feb. 18.

Sen. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, sponsored Martinez’s week in the Legislature. The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. The educational experience is furthered by guest speakers. It also includes classes with topics like budget writing and how a bill becomes a law, which culminates in pages creating their own bills in a mock committee setting. “I liked being on the Floor,” Martinez said. “Seeing the whole process up front and how everything works was very cool.”

Pages also have the opportunity to work on the Senate floor while the Senate is in session. Martinez is in 11th grade at M-P, where he is on the soccer and football teams. He is also the Junior Class president, saying that he enjoys being in a leadership position and working to make events happen. In his free time, he enjoys playing the guitar, and the occasional video game. This summer, Martinez spent a few weeks in Spain with the Washington World Fellows Program, sponsored by Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib.
