MARYSVILLE – The Marysville School District Foundation raised $500 for high school graduating student scholarships at a Santa breakfast Saturday.

“That’s enough for one scholarship,” said Sandie Phipps, a vice president of the group, which awards four $500 scholarships a year.

About 100 people attended the event at Applebees. Phipps said they needed 50 people to break even. She added she hopes to make this an annual event.

Phipps said the nonprofit, all-volunteer group that supports the school district is looking for members. It costs nothing to join. They have about one meeting a month. Other fundraisers include: Silvertips and Aquasox nights, and $5 from each ticket they sell for Seattle shows at the Paramount and 5th Avenue theaters. For details go to www.foundationmsd.org or email msdfoundation25@gmail.com.

The restaurant offers community groups the chance to raise money by cooking breakfasts during a time it usually is closed. The community group has to provide the wait staff as volunteers.

Part of the attraction was a visit from Santa and his helper Buddy the Elf. One of their fans was 9-year-old Kason Erwin, who looked a lot like Ralphie of A Christmas Story fame.
