Got junk? 3 ways to make your clean-up quick & easy

Local experts share how to get your home ready for a sale or move

Across town or across the country, if you’re moving to a new home, you’re going to have junk you don’t want to haul with you.

That’s especially true if you’re downsizing from a long-time home into a smaller place, where years of accumulated furniture and belongings can’t come with you.

“We’ll often get calls from realtors or family members getting a home ready to sell when the homeowner is downsizing or moving into a retirement residence, for example,” notes Shane Henderson, owner of Henderson’s Hauling.

Sometimes those calls come after a homeowner has passed away, so the Henderson’s team works with the family to remove those items that won’t be passed along.

“Anytime someone is selling a home, there are unwanted items that need to be removed to help show the home at its best,” Shane notes.

How can you make the removal efforts run smoothly?

  1. Have everything clearly marked or positioned for removal. If the junk is mixed in with pieces that are staying or moving to a new home, ensure items to be removed are clearly identified.
  2. Try to clear a pathway. The easier it is for the Henderson’s team to access the home and areas to be cleaned, and have a clear path to their vehicle, the quicker the process will go.
  3. Consider NOT having the homeowner on site. Sometimes the process of leaving their home of many years can be challenging for homeowners, as can letting go of items they can’t keep. In that case, it may be best if they’re not at home during removal, perhaps leaving a knowledgeable family member instead, Shane suggests.

With close to two decades in the industry, Henderson’s also works with banks and rental agencies, left to deal with major messes and even hazardous waste from abandoned properties – appliances, old cars … they do it all!

“It’s rewarding cleaning up messes – you see the effect of your work immediately and the impact that has for the customer,” reflects Shane, who also appreciates being able to recycle as much as possible.

The Henderson’s difference:

The fact is, most waste removal businesses don’t have an actual owner on the job site ensuring things go as the customer wishes. With Henderson’s, Shane is on site to confirm the greatest care is taken with the home and property.

“We know what we’re doing. With more than 15 years in the junk industry there’s really not much that can surprise us,” Shane says, noting that communication is a difference-maker in his approach. “I pick up the phone, I text, I’m here to answer any questions. I really want to make sure our customers are fully satisfied with our services.”
