State of Naval Station Everett: 'Excellent' but busy

Thomas Mascolo, at the State of the Station luncheon for Naval Station Everett, April 18. "When we don't appear busy, your Everett-based sailors are very busy, in inverse proportion to the occupancy of the port."

Sailor honored for service
 - KIRK BOXLEITNER The Arlington Times Aug 28 2008, 5:04 PM EVERETT Petty Officer 3rd Class Jimmy Castro is one of many sailors who lives at the Naval Station Everett site in Marysville, but he was singled out at the "State of the Station" luncheon in Everett, April 18, for his exceptional service.

From Feb. 6, 2007 to Jan. 6, 2008, Castro was an Individual Augmentee serving at Camp Bucca in Iraq, and he was one of four IAs are from Naval Station Everett to be honored at the luncheon.

An IA is a U.S. military member assigned to to fill in for, or augment, members of other units. IAs assigned individually, rather than as part of a larger group, such as a brigade, battalion or company, and have been used to fill shortages or meet requirements for individuals with specialized knowledge or skill sets. As a result, IAs can be assigned to work with branches of service other than their own, and many have been used in Iraq.

County sets hearing for proposed comprehensive plan amendments
Aug 28 2008, 5:04 PM That full page of legalese in the Arlington Times last week can be boiled down to a couple paragraphs in plain English.

The county announced a public hearing will begin April 30 to review proposed changes in its comprehensive plan.

The amendments that impact residents in the Arlington area include four ordinances. Three of them have to do with gravel resources.

North County Regional Fire Authority has announced that Proposition No. 2, requesting an increase in property taxes to restore the emergency medical services levy to 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, will run on the May ballot, along with the proposed bond to pay for a new library in Arlington.

Prop. 2 asks residents of North County Fire/EMS, formerly knows as Fire Districts No. 14 in Warm Beach and No. 18 in Bryant to restore the emergency medical services levy to 50 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation the same rate approved by voters a few years ago.

Benches for bus stops
Some new benches have popped up around Arlington, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Virginia Hatch who recruited cash donations from more than 15 different parties, including individuals, businesses and community service organizations. So far, seven of the 19 benches paid for have been installed. Public Works Director Len Olive said that city crews are installing the benches as they have projects in various neighborhoods. “We’ve got seven in and we still need to apply plaques, too,” Olive said. Meanwhile, Community Transit has been adding two-seater “benches” at bus stops around town as well. Of the full-scale, bench seats with backs priced at $350, the Rotary Club of Arlington bought three benches and the Arlington Garden Club, Cascade Surveying and Engineering, and Jet Landscaping & Fences each bought two benches and the following individuals and organizations have each paid for one bench for bus stops around Arlington: CURRIE Construction Inc., Stillaguamish Elders of Sit in Peace, Herb & Georgia Swift of New Beginning Thrift Store, Robin Miller of Favorite Pastime,  Dr. John & Kelly Dykstra, Arlington Kiwanis,  Kyle & Kristy Stephenson family, Kyle, Kristy, Jordan Wyatt, Scott & Vickie Solla, John V. Arlington boys track takes first at Marysville
AHS junior Kellen Botten places first in the 100, with a personal record of 11.52. - KIRK BOXLEITNER The Arlington Times Aug 28 2008, 5:21 PM MARYSVILLE Faces were bright on March 17, when the Arlington track team pulled off a successful meet. The meet was held at Marysville for Arlington and Stanwood, with the Arlington boys placing first overall, winning a total of seven out of 17 events.

Senior Marcus Dolan placed first in the 200, earning a personal record of 22.83. Junior Kellen Botten had an excellent race in the 100, with first place and a personal record of 11.52. Not only did Dolan and Botten take first in their individual events, they were also on the winning team of the 4 x 100 relay with Brandon Gunter and Bryan Mack. The team had a time of 44.15, owed in part to their smooth hand-offs.

Distance also went well for the boys. Paul Simbeck placed first in the 1,600 (4:46.16) and second in the 3,200 (10:33.70), while Luke Passalacqua took a close second in the 800 with a personal record of 2:03.02, less than two seconds behind the first-place finisher.
