MARYSVILLE — Close to 30 area breakdancers stepped up Aug. 6 to promote the Marysville YMCA's upcoming 360 B-Boy, B-Girl and Emcee Battle, and they did it with an assist from Marysville Regal Cinemas.The theater hosted the breakdancing demonstration from 7-10 p.m. during the premiere of "Step Up 3D," providing some pavement for the breakdancers to show off their moves and make people aware of the YMCA's breakdancing competition at Totem Middle School Sept. 25.
Benji Travis started the 360 event at the Marysville YMCA with two of his friends when he was just 18, and eight years later, the 26-year-old is still spearheading the event and recruiting more participants every year.
Snohomish Health District offers tips to beat the heatSnohomish County Parks and the Lake Goodwin Community Club will co-host a barbecue and fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Lake Goodwin Park, located at 4620 Lakewood Rd. in Stanwood. The event is free to the public, but donations will be accepted in support of replacing damaged playground equipment, including the $35,000 centerpiece — a pirate ship enjoyed by children and parents alike.

Marysville Kiwanis serve food to raise funds for kids

SMOKEY POINT — The Marysville Kiwanis Club's Bingo Run pancake breakfast at Sound Harley-Davidson Aug. 7 raised an estimated $200 for the Law Enforcement Torch Run's Special Olympics funds, but local Kiwanians want their community to know that they've got plenty more events coming up that could use more volunteers.According to Marysville Kiwanis Club Treasurer Mike Ferri, the Kiwanians served 97 breakfasts that morning, which he acknowledged was "relatively small," but he touted its importance nonetheless.
Preliminary results come in for Aug. 17 primary electionIn the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Patty Murray has garnered 433,211 votes (46.04 percent) to Dino Rossi's 319,708 votes (33.98 percent).
In the race for U.S. Representative District 2, incumbent Rick Larsen has received 48,762 votes (42.85 percent) while challenger John Koster garnered 46,560 votes (40.91 percent).
Vallin takes the helm at The Globe and The Times

MARYSVILLE — Janice Vallin began her first day as the publisher of The Marysville Globe and The Arlington Times Aug. 9, and her first priority is to get to know her new hometown.“I’ll be listening to our staff and the community,” said Vallin, formerly of Austin, Texas. “I want to know where we stand, what we’re already doing well and what we need to improve. What makes papers like ours most relevant is when they’re hyper-local.”
Vallin is pleased that the two newspapers’ websites update with new content at least once a day, and often multiple times daily.
Crews closing section of SR 530, installing solar-powered reflectors

ARLINGTON — Transportation crews will soon be closing a two-mile section of SR 530 as they install solar-powered road reflectors.Crews will close all lanes of the road between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20 and Saturday, Aug. 21, while they put in the reflectors between both entrances to Oso Loop Road between Arlington and Darrington.
Local traffic will be able to access the road during construction, while other traffic will be detoured to Oso Loop Road.
Primary Election results taking shapeNorth Sound Professionals, along with Arlington Business Builders, will be holding a wine tasting and networking event at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Arlington Windermere Real Estate office, located at 210 E. Burke Ave.
Cost for tickets is $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
