vening news squibs showed Seattle and Edmonds demonstrators complaining about coal trains. Does it take them that long to take notice or are big-city folks just slower to react than our sort of country bumpkins? The oddest part was the focus of their complaint.
Waste Management resumes collections for Marysville, Arlington

As of Thursday, Aug. 2, Waste Management Northwest and union leadership have agreed to a new six-year contract, which means that Waste Management Northwest's garbage drivers have returned to work and are servicing their regular collection routes. Due to the timing of the ratification vote, however, the recycling and yard waste collection for Aug. 2 will be limited.
United Way recognizes county's top volunteers

TULALIP — Based on nominations submitted by the public back in June, United Way of Snohomish County will be recognizing five of the county's top volunteers at its annual Spirit of Snohomish County Breakfast on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Tulalip Resort Casino.
Countywide outdoor burning ban commences Aug. 6

Due to high fire danger, and prolonged hot and dry weather conditions, the Snohomish County Fire Marshal has called for an outdoor burning ban for unincorporated areas beginning 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6.
Stillaguamish Festival of the River runs Aug. 10-12

ARLINGTON — The Stillaguamish Festival of the River and Pow Wow are fast approaching.
The 23rd annual event, which takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, and Sunday, Aug. 12, will again be held at River Meadows County Park. This year will also include an additional day for the festival, starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, for a music show. The festival became a three-day event starting last year.
Council on Aging seeks new members for next term

The Snohomish County Council on Aging is recruiting new members now for terms beginning in January of next year.
Snohomish County residents who are interested in the needs and issues facing older persons, and younger persons with disabilities, should consider applying for membership on the Council.
Marysville Sikh temple memorializes victims of Wisconsin shooting

MARYSVILLE — The Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Marysville plans to conduct a special service and candlelight vigil on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 11, for the victims of the Aug. 5 shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
Early returns of 2012 primary election results released

Although the results of the Aug. 7 primary election have yet to be certified, early returns have been released.
As of Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 8:33 p.m., Proposition 1 on the ballot for Silvana Fire District 19 has received 215 "yes" votes, or 60.91 percent of the votes counted, and 138 "no" votes, or 39.09 percent of the votes counted, out of a total of 353 votes counted.
