2 arrested in shooting vandalism at M’ville school

MARYSVILLE – Two teens have been arrested in connection with shooting up Pinewood Elementary School over New Year’s Eve.

Pinewood was shot at more than 60 times with a firearm, causing up to $50,000 in damage, a Marysville police report says. A 19-year-old Marysville man and an 18-year-old Tulalip man who is a Marysville School District student were arrested. Both will be booked into the Snohomish County Jail in Everett on suspicion of malicious mischief in the first degree, a class B felony. Marysville investigators received a tip late Wednesday night. One firearm has been recovered. The motive is still being investigated.

Marysville detective Craig Bartl said, “The current information we have supports our original assessment that this was an act of vandalism and that no person or persons were the target of their actions.” On Jan. 1 at about 1 p.m. a neighbor who heard an alarm at Pinewood, 5115 84th St NE, walked over to check. She discovered dozens of bullet holes in the windows and doors and called 9-1-1. The library suffered the most damage. The shots were fired between 11:55 p.m. Dec. 31 and 12:25 a.m. Jan. 1. “The timing of the vandalism with New Year’s Eve fireworks is not lost on us,” Cmdr. Mark Thomas said.

Most of the damage was done from inside the courtyards and is not visible from the street. Marysville police and school officials worked to ensure that students, parents and staff felt secure returning to school after winter break. School Resource Officers were at school, and there was an increased visibility of other officers. Crime Stoppers was offering an award of up to $1,000.
