Underprivileged kids of Darrington and a college student are the winners of the 2nd annual Darrington Kiwanis $1,000 raffle. On Saturday, the winning ticket for $1,000 was drawn by Jennifer West. She drew the ticket of Eliza Schillhammer, daughter of our Darrington doctor and a pre-med student at Occidental College. From the funds raised by the raffle, the Kiwanis Club is donating $500 to purchase toys for needy children. That check was presented to Lisa Peterson, of the Darrington Food Bank, who will do the purchasing of the toys. This year the Darrington Food Bank will be giving toys from the Kiwanis Club of Darrington along with its own baskets of food for families with children. The remaining money raised from the raffle will go to other Kiwanis projects, such as scholarships, pre-school programs, and other community needs. Our projects almost always benefit youth and children, since the Motto of Kiwanis is Serving the Children of the World. The Do It Best Hardware Store gave the space to the Kiwanis Club and the Food Bank for this activity. Cookies and cranberry-apple spiced cider were provided to the community members for free. A barrel for the donation of additional toys and money will be left in the Do It Best Hardware Store in Darrington. Jennifer West, right, draws the winning ticket with help from Kiwanis President Toni Larsen.
