ARLINGTON We just love dogs, said Tim Gillam, of Pawsitively Styling. Theyre the biggest challenge and the best part of what we do.
Gillam and Dawn Farmer opened their business in Arlington last month, but they boast a dozen years each of experience in the field of pet grooming, inspired by their mutual love of dogs.
As a husband-and-wife dog-showing team, Gillam and Farmer picked up a number of pet grooming techniques during their competitions and went on to become certified, not only as groomers themselves, but also as teachers of other groomers.
You have to have patience and compassion to do this job, but thats not hard, Farmer said. Dogs are full of unconditional love and forgiveness. Even if they dont want their feet trimmed, theyll be prancing around proudly once its done, because they know it makes us happy.
Farmer recalled that she and her husband worked for other pet grooming businesses, before they finally got the itch to try out their own ideas on how to run such a business. Gillam noted that Pawsitively Styling tries to strike a balance between the two extremes of scheduling multiple pets for grooming.
We want to be able to take our time with the dogs, to make sure were doing it right, but we dont want to take them for the whole day, Gillam said. We kind of try to stagger our drop-offs and pick-ups for multiple clients.
We dont want to hassle the dogs, said Farmer, who asks that pet owners plan to leave their animals at the salon for up to four hours. We will take walk-ins, but only if we can fit them in.
Pawsitively Styling uses natural lighting, shampoos and conditioners specially formulated for pet grooming, high-velocity cool-air blowers and hand-drying, filtered water in their drinking fountains and a securely fenced outdoor doggie potty yard. Its services include styling for all breeds, customized styling, bath and flea treatments, nail trimming, gland expressing, ear plucking, teeth brushing, hand-stripping, cologne spritzes and even a choice of bows or bandanas for the dogs.
Rates vary according to the breed and size of the pet, as well as the type of grooming being performed. The salon is currently open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Pawsitively Styling is located at 20404 67th Ave. NE, Suite B, in Arlington, and its phone number is 360-435-5421.
