ARLINGTON After an executive session on ""personnel issues"" following the Monday night Arlington City Council meeting, Arlington Police Chief John Gray announced his resignation Tuesday morning, June 24.
The public and the press are not allowed in executive sessions to provide the Council the opportutnity to discuss confidential issues. Any action as a result of the executive session must be taken in public meetings.
The city's assistant administrator, Kristin Banfield, said Gray met with Mayor Margaret Larson Tuesday morning. Gray has been police chief in Arlington since 2001. His contract was due to expire in October.
""We have mutually agreed to part ways,"" Banfield said. The city will start a search once the dust settles, she added.
""It's way too fresh at the moment,"" Banfield said Wednesday morning, June 25.
The city is working on an agreement with Gray and will likely take action at the next City Council meeting July 7.
""Unless we decide to have a special meeting during the June 30 workshop, in which case we will notify the public.""
Lieutenant Terry Quintrall will be acting chief in the meantime, she said.
