QueCentral.com promotes safe Internet use, charitable causes

ARLINGTON Arlingtons Tony Luque wants to give Internet users safe Web browsing, while pitching in for charity at the same time.
The Gleneagle resident and Pioneer Elementary parent has lived in the area for eight years and worked in technical security for 15 years, and he received so many questions over the years about how to stay safe while searching and shopping online that he set up a site, www.QueCentral.com, to provide those answers.
I thought of it as a way of giving back, Luque said. Its evolved from an e-zine three years ago, but the content is still free and requires no user registration. Ive enjoyed doing it, but Ive also wanted to make a bigger difference to the community.
Luque created QueCentral to be an ad-free Web site portal to the rest of the Internet, which provides access to pre-screened shopping sites and a steady stream of information on how users can protect themselves, their families and their personal data online.
Luque explained that purchases made through QueCentrals no-cost-added shopping links generate enough funds not only to cover the sites operating revenue, but also to support an evolving mix of charitable causes.
Shopping sites automatically set aside referral fees to sites that link them, such as QueCentral, without you, the consumer, ever having to pay anything, Luque said. QueCentral uses a mix of 20 metrics to evaluate e-commerce sites before they are designated as trusted, safe shopping sites. Currently, less than half of the online merchants evaluated meet the criteria for approval. The evaluations are ongoing. When theyre approved, new merchants are added to QueCentral.com.
Luque designed QueCentral.com to serve as users home page, complete with news feeds on subjects ranging from consumer product safety to more generalized current events, and a safety-locked Google search bar, to make it less likely that younger users will access inappropriate content online.
You can search for trusted sites by category or alphabetically on QueCentral.com, Luque said. If theres a site out there that I havent rated yet, you can even send me an e-mail about it and ask for a review. I cant guarantee Ill get to it right away, because it takes a while to walk through the whole process of using and researching a site.
Luques current charities include the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and causes such as autism awareness, but hes looking into supporting local organizations as well.
