ARLINGTON The Arlington City Hall plaza will serve as the staging grounds for a Rally for Peace Jan. 27, from noon to 1 p.m., coordinated by the Social Concerns Committee of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Arlington, and in conjunction with a national rally in Washington, D.C.
According to Marion Harrison of the Social Concerns Committee, the Immaculate Conception Parish was contacted by the Veterans for Peace, who are also set to sponsor a Rally for Peace near Olympia.
We need to join in to focus attention on our returning veterans, said Harrison, whose grandson, Evan Harrison Corey, is currently on the ground in Iraq. They need total health care, and theres a bill coming up in Congress addressing that issue. Were not just an anti-war group. All were asking for is peace.
Harrison invited other church congregations, as well as any other veterans and civilians who are interested, to attend the event, and requested that they bring either signs or flags.
We havent heard from [Evan] since Christmas and his mom is a little worried, Harrison said. Weve already lost at least two from the Arlington area. Whoever wants to show up can show up. We dont want to cause any confusion and well clean up after ourselves. We just want the opportunity to express ourselves.
