ARLINGTON — Arlington resident Amy Kennedy recently received a special Mother's Day gift — a $500 gift certificate to Safeway.

Kennedy won the certificate after her name was selected in an American Legion raffle earlier this month.

"When she received the news that she had won the raffle, she was ecstatic and said she has never won anything," said Linda Koch, volunteer for the Toys for Kids program. "Her daughter, Kalee Wright, was super excited about her mom's win."

The Toys for Kids program, which is organized in conjunction with Post 76 and the Arlington Food Bank, has been providing toys to the children of Arlington for the past 18 years, Koch said.

Last year organizers raised more than $17,000 from community-based fundraisers and were able to provide toys to more than 600 children.

Volunteers hold a variety of fundraisers throughout the year, including a hamburger and hotdog stand in June, a Spam-carving contest in September, a murder-mystery dinner in October and a live auction and dinner in December.
