Eagle among finalists for National Merit Scholarship

ARLINGTON – Arlington High School senior Cole Hahn is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship, a nationwide academic competition.

Hahn became a finalist based on his high test scores in the Preliminary SAT his junior year. He also had to write an essay and receive a recommendation from his counselor.

Hahn played soccer for four years, wrestled for three years, was a part of National Honor Society and participated in Knowledge Bowl. He took Advanced Placement classes and said that Arlington High School prepared him well.

AHS Principal Duane Fish with the achievement Cole is among the top half percent of the nation’s high school seniors. Hahn plans to attend either Stanford or the University of Washington. He would like to major in computer engineering. He’ll find out if he earned a scholarship this spring.

Volunteers sought for plantings to help Grant Creek fish

ARLINGTON – Volunteers are being sought to help plant trees and native shrubs to help salmon in Grant Creek.

The plantings will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 5 and March 12.

Parents or guardians are advised to help supervise children ages 5 and older.

Sound Salmon Solutions is putting on the events to help the Stillaguamish Watershed.

Department of Ecology is funding the restoration project.

2 transportation projects in Arlington

ARLINGTON – The state Department of Transportation has announced two projects taking place on Interstate 5 just north of State Route 530 starting this week.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the left lane of northbound I-5 will be closed over the Stillaguamish River. This is to give crews a safe space to repair the guardrail. The lane reduction is from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m..

The I-5 repaving project has also resumed between Highways 534 and 530. For three weeks, southbound drivers can expect overnight lane reductions, Sunday through Thursday, from 7:30 p.m. to 5 the following morning.

Arlington police designate MeetUp Spot

ARLINGTON – The Arlington Police Department has designated the parking area in front of the police station, 110 E. Third Street, as a Community MeetUp Spot. The designation is done in partnership with OfferUp to create brightly lit areas to meet up with someone to inspect items and complete online sales. The area has surveillance cameras to increase safety.

Deluxe small business marketing seminar

ARLINGTON – While Arlington missed the final cut to appear on Hulu’s reality television show, “Small Business Revolution – Main Street,” finishing in the top 10 still has its own rewards – other than cash and the celebrity spotlight.

ARLINGTON – United Way’s Tax Preparation Program offers free tax help to people who make $55,000 or less. Required documents to bring: Picture ID; Social Security card or ITIN number; W-2s or other income or tax documents (1099, 1098T, 1095, etc.), bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit.

Services are available at the Arlington Community Resource Center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd., through April 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 p.m.

Sign up for Highly Capable consideration

ARLINGTON – Arlington Public Schools is accepting Highly Capable Program referrals for kindergarten through 11th-graders March 1-29.

Students will be considered for evaluation for possible program participation for the 2019-20 school year.

Students who are highly capable may possess, but are not limited to, the following learning characteristics:

•Capacity to learn with unusual depth, to retain what has been learned, and to transfer learning; •Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity earlier than peers; •Creative ability to make unusual connections among ideas; •Ability to learn quickly in areas of intellectual strength; and •Capacity for intense concentration.

Parks commissioner resigns

ARLINGTON – After more than six years of service on the City’s Parks, Arts, and Recreation Commission, Commissioner Tiffany McAuslan is stepping down. She was honored for her service by Mayor Barb Tolbert and the Arlington City Council at the Feb. 19 council meeting.

She owned and operated a landscape construction company with her husband, and recently returned to college for her horticulture degree. She advised the city on tree plantings and replanted the flower boxes at City Hall.

Empowering Parents now set for March 12

ARLINGTON – The “Empowering Parents” forum to give parents tips and tools to fight drug abuse has been been rescheduled to 6 p.m. March 12 in the Byrnes Performing Arts Center at Arlington High School, 18825 Crown Ridge Blvd.

The Snohomish Health District will share an overview of issues including new information about opioid misuse in Snohomish County. Arlington police officer Stephanie Ambrose will engage with parents about social media and describe what parents should be doing to monitor online interactions. Ambrose will also answer questions about what rights parents have and how “snoopy” they should be. Public safety, health and intervention experts will serve on a panel to answer question, and a Healthy Options Resource Fair kicks off the evening at 5:30 p.m.

Arlington Valley Road ribbon-cutting reset

ARLINGTON – A ribbon-cutting and dedication for the new Arlington Valley Road project that connects 74th Avenue NE to 191st Place NE west of Highway 9 has been rescheduled to 2 p.m. March 15. The road was designed to get freight from industries located in the vicinity back to the freeway without trucks congesting 67th Avenue and 204th Street.

Free Parks day March 19

Washington State Parks invites visitors to help celebrate the agency’s 106th birthday on March 19 by enjoying a state park for free that day. March 19 is the third of 12 State Parks free day in 2019, when visitors are not required to display the Discover Pass for day-use visits.

The remaining free days are: April 20 and 22; June 1, 8-9; Aug. 25, Sept. 28 and Nov. 11 and 29.

The Discover Pass costs $30 annually or $10 for one day.
