Arlington needs your say in shaping city’s long-term future

ARLINGTON – The city is facing a problem concerning future population.

It will take community and business leaders to help find a balance of mixed uses to make the city more livable.

The city is hosting open houses to gain input from people regarding Arlington’s Mixed Use Development Plan within commercial zones.

Arlington population is estimated to grow from 18,489 to 24,937 residents by 2035. City officials are pursuing a strategy to create diversity in future housing options that allows higher densities but still provides walkable, livable neighborhoods and access to services. Mixed use would better balance compatible uses such as retail, restaurant, office and civic spaces.

“We need to have public involvement and engagement,” Community and Economic Development director Marc Hayes said. “The input we get from community members does bring something to our realization” as planners.

Here are the upcoming open houses scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m.:

* May 23, and July 25, Arlington Airport Office, 18204 59th Ave. NE

* May 24, and July 26, Smokey Point Community Church, 17721 Smokey Point Blvd.

*July 11, City Council chambers, 110 E. Third St.
