Impaired driving head-on crash critically injures Arlington man

SKAGIT COUNTY, Wa – An Arlington man is in critical condition and another in jail on suspicion of driving under the influence after state patrol troopers responded to a head-on collision Saturday on SR 9 near the Skagit-Snohomish county line.

Timothy Smith, 57, of Sedro-Woolley was allegedly driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol as he was headed southbound on SR 9, according to the state patrol. The suspect tried an unsafe pass of two vehicles on a double-yellow stretch of highway when he struck 48-year-old Scott McCauley of Arlington’s vehicle head on.

Firefighters and medics from multiple agencies extricated the victim from his vehicle, then took him by ambulance to a waiting Airlift Northwest Medical Helicopter that airlifted him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The suspect was treated for his injuries, then booked into the Skagit County Jail for investigation of driving under the influence and vehicular assault.
