ARLINGTON – Family and friends will hold a sunset vigil Friday, line the Centennial Trail Bridge at Haller Park where a Camano Island man jumped to his death Aug. 4, and float flowers downriver.

The Snohomish County Medical Exeminer’s Office on Wednesday identified the man as Alec J. Althusisius, 24. His death was ruled as an accidental drowning.

His Facebook page listed him as a Stanwood High School graduate who worked as a commercial diving supervisor at LiquiVision Technology, a company that cleans and repairs water storage tanks.

Greg Winter of Arlington was one of several witnesses at the busy Stillaguamish River that day, and became a participant as the tragedy unfolded.

“I watched a kid jump, then hit his face on the water. I looked at him, could have reached him, listened to his friends say, ‘He’s fine, he’s fine,’” Winter recounted at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

He described the party-like scene as “a small city on the beach that day. Mayhem. I looked again, and he’s five feet below the surface now. Again, people were hollering, ‘He’s fine, he’s fine.’”

When the man did not surface again, witnesses called 9-1-1 at about 7:50 p.m., a sheriff’s report says.

About 15 people entered the river to try to locate the man. He was found and pulled from the river. He died later at Cascade Valley Hospital in Arlington.

The sheriff’s report says the area is posted “No Swimming” and that intoxicants may have been involved.
