EVERETT – By all accounts, 2018 was an awesome year to be an Eagle.
Arlington High School held its commencement exercises at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett on Thursday, June 14. Proud parents, extended family, friends, teachers and school staff packed the room to show their support for the years leading up to the evening, and the years ahead.
For the 350 seniors who collected their diplomas before choosing the next places they’ll go in their journey post-high school, there was much to celebrate.
Duane Fish, in his first year as principal, recapped a successful year for student achievement and academic performance.
* Four Wesco 3A athletic championships, including boys and girls cross country, boys and girls track and field, baseball.
* 1 in 10 distinguished graduates with a 3.75 to 3.9 GPA, and another 1 in 10 honors students with a 3.5 to 3.74 GPA
* A total of $92,000 in scholarships awarded.
* Acceptance into colleges in eight different states, Canada and Scotland
* One of the best jazz and concert bands in the state.
“It goes without saying it was an awesome year to be an Eagle,” Fish said. “I am a more than proud principal, I can tell you that.”
The ceremony opened with “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by the Arlington High School Band under director John Grabowski. The AHS Air Force Junior ROTC presented the colors, followed by a welcome from Principal Duane Fish.
Dean Shephard, Senior Activities Manager and Johnathon Leon-Guerrero, Senior Class Treasurer served as masters of cememony.
Katherine Marie Taylor and Emily Jean Senn had the honor of presenting valedictorian addresses for their fellow classmates, and expressed their gratitude to family and school personnel for their support.
“I want to thank every who helped us get to this point,” Senn said. “Staff, teachers, faculty, coaches and counselors, you have given us extraordinary guidance. We are capable of so much, and accomplishing so much.”
Arlington High School Flight choir, directed by Jeff Swanson, sang a soulful “Lean On Me.”
When you get where you’re going, don’t forget to turn around and help the next person behind. Always stay humble.
Many of you may be leaving Arlington for just a little while, and when you do please remember who you represent. Three things.
* Be involved
* Work hard and
* Be kind
In her remarks, Superintendent Chrys Sweeting marveled at the accomplishments and dedication displayed by the Class of 2018.
“I have seen and heard fabulous musical productions and concerts you’ve performed; Seussical was spectacular,” she said. “I have eaten the meals and desserts prepared by culinary arts students including a special Asian soup that was delicious. I have seen you perform, complete, persevere and excel as athlets. I have seen yo volunteer and serve in the community. I have seen you support and stand up for one another.”
Superintendent Chrys Sweeting said she believes that living well includes being a learner for life as well as giving back.
“Keep learning and seek to become a better you over and over, pursue your dreams with courage, perseverance and tenacity, and reach beyond yourself and serve others.”
She urged the graduates to to take the next important step into their future and seek their potential as lifelong learners.
