Oh, the places you’ll go: AHS’s ‘Seussical the Musical’ opens March 2-3 (slideshow)

ARLINGTON- Did you love reading silly Dr. Suess books as a kid?

You can experience all that again by attending Arlington High School’s production of “Suessical the Musical!”

The Broadway musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty focuses on a small child who finds a hat and conjures up the Cat in the Hat from the Dr. Suess stories.

A Seussian world is then created around them. The world is based on 15 Dr. Suess stories including “Horton Hears a Who” and “Horton Hatches an Egg.”

The fast-moving show features characters and snippets from the many books. The basic story line revolves around the efforts of Horton to protect the Whos, a people so diminutive that they live on a speck of dust. Horton hides Whoville on a cloverleaf to keep them safe, but it is stolen by impish monkeys called the Wickershams.

Horton is helped in his rescue effort by a bird-lady neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz.

The Cat in the Hat serves as narrator and emcee for the musical.

There are a dazzling array of 37 songs to keep audiences entertained throughout the production.

“It has taken us countless hours to create detailed sets and costumes for this production,” said Arlington High School Drama Director, Scott Moberly. “The students have worked incredibly hard and they’re excited to share their efforts with the community!”

Performances will be March 2-3 and March 9-10 at 7 p.m. There will also be a matinee show on March 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for senior citizens and students, and $10 for other adults.
