Times-Globe win 23 awards at statewide newspaper WNPA convention

The Marysville Globe-Arlington Times came away with 23 awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association convention in Wenatchee Oct. 14.

The Marysville Globe-Arlington Times came away with 23 awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association convention in Wenatchee Oct. 14.

“We were happy we won 13 awards last year, but to win 23 this year is outstanding,” Managing Editor Steve Powell said today. “We are especially proud to win in so many areas, proving we have a well-rounded publication.”

The Globe-Times took eight firsts, eight seconds and seven thirds in 11 categories.

Advertising: The Globe staff took 1st place and the Times 3rd in their different circulation categories for Multiple Advertiser Ad for their respective high school sports posters.

Special sections: Paul Brown, Jody Knoblich and JoAnn Flynn took 3rd in Special Sections for the Spring Health and Wellness publication for the Globe.

Website: Both the Times and Globe placed 2nd for Best Website. Brandon Adam placed 1st in Best Video for the Globe for Marysville’s 125th Birthday Celebration. For the Times, he placed 3rd for his “Arlington loses to Bonney Lake,” football video. For Best Online Photo Essay, Powell was 2nd for the Globe for the “New M-P Cafeteria.”

Photography: Powell placed 3rd in Color Portrait for “Santa Surprised” for the Globe and 3rd for Color Pictorial for the Times for “Tulip Festival.”

Sports: Adam placed 1st in Best Sports Feature for the Globe for “Navarro overcomes obstacles.” He also placed 2nd in Sports Page Design for “State Track Meet.”

Editorial: Powell placed 1st in Best Editorial Pages for “Only you can prevent Fourth fires.” He was also 3rd for Best Editorial for the Globe for “Alternatives to fireworks ban.” And he was 1st in Column Writing for his first-person series on CERT Training.

Entertainment: Powell was 1st for the Globe in Best Story on the Arts for his feature on Bill Engvall called, “Comic not PC.”

Features: Powell was 2nd for his feature on muslim Mustafa Al-harib for Best Short Personality Profile with “Isis worse than the devil.” He was also 2nd in Best Lifestyle Story for the Globe with “GoFundMe.”

News: Powell was 2nd in Investigative Reporting for the Globe with “Rainbow Love.” Former reporter Kirk Boxleitner was 1st in Government Reporting with “Poverty simulation” for the Times.

Business: Powell was 3rd in Business News with “Disabled workers.” Boxleitner was 1st for the Times with his Business Feature on “3D Hands.”

Environment: Powell was 2nd for the Globe with “Building an Estuary.”
