Train hits car, but not in intersection in Marysville; search for Arlington woman ends up empty

And other briefs Sept. 25

MARYSVILLE — A driver died when a vehicle collided with a train Tuesday.

Marysville police said the southbound car hit a northbound train around 5 a.m. in the 8900 block of State Avenue. The two-door coupe was dragged nearly a mile to 104th Street before it came free, Cmrd. Mark Thomas said.

Police believe the car struck the train north of 88th Street NE, where it would have crossed a strip of grass, well away from an intersection or State Avenue. What led the car and driver to that spot was under investigation.

“It’s too early to tell,” Thomas said.

The busy area’s intersections were blocked for about 2 1/2 hours.

Candle starts fire in Marysville home

MARYSVILLE – An unattended candle reportedly caused a fire Monday inside a home in the 2900 block of George Comenote Lane.

Two people inside the home called 9-1-1 shortly after 1 p.m. and reported that a candle on top of an entertainment center had fallen over and started the fire. They managed to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and evacuate before firefighters arrived. Firefighters evaluated one patient for smoke inhalation. Damage from the fire is estimated at less than $10,000.

Arlington, others get $770K FEMA grant

ARLINGTON – Three local fire departments will receive a $770,000 federal grant to replace 123 sets of self contained breathing apparatus that can no longer be serviced.

The agencies are in Arlington, Camano Island and North County.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our departments to replace life-saving equipment with minimal impact on our budgets,” Arlington Fire Chief Dave Kraski said.

Camano Island Fire Chief Michael Schick said the equipment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant will help the three departments work better together.

And North County Fire and EMS Chief John Cermak said the new SCBA equipment is the latest breathing apparatus technology.

He added it matches “equipment used by many of our county mutual aid partners.”
