Lakewood’s Wilson places 8th at Mat Classic

TACOMA — The Lakewood Cougars took a pair of wrestlers to Mat Classic XXIII and came away with one medal.
Senior 285-pounder Alex Wilson took eighth place in a deep bracket at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 19.

Wilson defeated Steilacoom’s Jack Newhouse 3-2 in the first round before getting knocked into the consolation bracket. Wilson then scored a pin (1:32) against Mount Baker’s Jake Larsen in the second round of the consolation bracket. He ended up going 2-3 in the tournament.

The Cougars also brought sophomore Allyson Lawton, who bowed out after three matches. Lawton took an opening round loss before defeating Tenino’s Morghann Eckardt 7-4 in the consolation bracket. She finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
