Arlington, Stanwood mothers hit the gridiron
June 7, 2011 · 8:19 AM
ARLINGTON — Marysville versus Lakewood won’t be the only powder puff football fundraiser kicking off at 7 p.m. on June 17.
The Arlington Youth Football Association is once again sending Arlington Eagle moms out onto the field, this time against Stanwood Spartan moms in what’s already been dubbed the “Battle for the Stilly Puff Cup.”
Haller stadium in Arlington will host the contest, with suggested admission prices of $5 per person and $10 per family, and with all proceeds going toward the AYFA and Stanwood-Camano Youth Football.
“Last year’s fundraiser game was huge,” said Kim Welton of the AYFA. “This year, we expect it to go off the charts, since Stanwood and Arlington are the two biggest rival towns that fight for the Stilly Cup every year, and both towns jam-pack stadiums for the biggest ‘Friday Night Lights’ we’ve seen. Many other towns are interested in playing us and want a piece of that pie.”
Last year marked the first powder puff football fundraiser for the AYFA, which brought in close to $5,000 from the event.
“We want every child to play football safely, even when so many families have fallen on hard times,” Welton said. “Last season, every child got to play because of this event.”
