Arlington Eagles head to playoffs | SLIDESHOW
EVERETT — A cold, wet and windy Friday night at Mariner High School’s Frank Goddard Memorial Stadium turned out to be in the Arlington Eagles’ benefit as the team topped the Marauders, 35-21, on Oct. 26.
The victory means that Arlington will continue to the state playoffs, playing Kentwood on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Quarterback Skylor Elgarico and the rest of the Eagle team brought in their notorious offensive strength, as Elgarico himself ran for more than 180 yards and two touchdowns.
The first scoring play of the night came from the visitors’ side as Jayden Jira scored a 7-yard touchdown following a completed pass by Elgarico, but that would prove to be the only score on the board for Arlington in the first half. Meanwhile, the Marauders’ offense was hard at work, with running back Joshua Williamson scoring two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, leaving Arlington trailing 14-7 going into half-time.
The third quarter offered several comeback opportunities for the Eagles, which they readily accepted, as Elgarico scored his first touchdown of the night, carrying the ball 41 yards for the score. And the offense wasn’t the only success of the night — shortly thereafter, the Eagles forced a Marauder fumble which was recovered by Jacob Johnson who ran 72 yards into the end zone to move the score in the Eagles’ favor to 21-14 at the end of the third quarter.
John Decker ran in a touchdown in the beginning of the fourth quarter, pushing their lead up to 28-14, and making it difficult for Mariner to make a comeback, although they did score a 21-yard passing touchdown with four minutes left in the game.
But it was Elgarico’s final two-yard rushing touchdown, with less than 30 seconds on the clock, that clinched the game for the Eagles to finish victorious with a final score of 35-21.
The team heads now to play the Kentwood Conquerors on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at French Field. Arlington’s record is 4-5 overall, while Kentwood is undefeated.
