EVERETT — The first round of the state football playoffs was a close one for the Lakewood Cougars, who fought hard against the Capital Cougars in a Saturday, Nov. 10, matchup at Frank Goddard Memorial Stadium.

Capital made the first scoring play of the night when Capital's running back Kai Van Sickle scored on a 3-yard run. Lakewood's Brandon Stott returned an 80-yard kick for a touchdown, and Randy Anaya kicked an extra point giving the Lakewood Cougars a lead of 7-6. Capital took back the lead when Van Sickle scored another touchdown and with a two-point conversion went into the second quarter with 14-7 lead.

Anaya scored a field goal in the second quarter, while Van Sickle scored another touchdown. Donovan Evans ran 21-yards for a touchdown, bringing the score to 21-16 to Capital at halftime.

The beginning of the second half gave Lakewood a 2-point lead when Justin Peterson caught a 17-yard pass from Kolby Schueller for a touchdown. The lead was short-lived however as Capital scored again on a 95-yard kickoff return. Peterson scored again on a pass from Schueller, giving the Cougars a 1-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Van Sickle ran in another touchdown to start the fourth quarter, while Peterson scored on a 7-yard run and a 2-point conversion, again to take back the lead.

Although the Cougars fought hard both defensively and offensively, they lost the game as Van Sickle rushed 33-yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and took possession of the ball after the kickoff, giving him the opportunity to score another touchdown and keep the game in Capital's favor.
