Cougs compete at Birger Solberg Invitational
MARYSVILLE Competing against bigger schools and some strong competition, the Lakewood High School track team put in a good showing at the Birger Solberg Team Invitational held April 12 in Bellingham.
The boys squad came in fifth out of 22 teams, while the girls finished eighth.
Head Coach Randy Davis said the teams finishing in front of Lakewood all were larger schools, including hometown rival Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
The Marysville-Pilchuck girls finished first, but Davis contended Seahome High School of Bellingham, which finished second on the boys side, is among the best teams in the state.
Were very pleased with our performance, Davis said.
Among Lakewoods athletes, Tawnya Hulslander undoubtedly had one of her best days ever. Davis said Tawnya set three personal records. The marks came in discus, javelin and shot put and were good enough for second-place finishes in the first two competitions, fifth place in javelin.
On the boys side, Devon Smith finished first in the 400 meters, with a time of 49.5. It was the second fastest time in school history, according to Davis less than 300ths of a second shy of the Lakewood record.
Devon also finished second in the 200 meter race.
Another first-place winner for Lakewood was Sarah Dunn, who covered 3,200 meters with a time of 11:34.65. Again like Devon, Sarah posted the second fastest time in Lakewood history for her event.
Davis pointed to several other of his athletes as having outstanding days. Terrence Ordonez finished second in the 800 meter event, with a time of 1:59.51. Pole vaulter Paydon Butler cleared 126 to also come in second. Nathan Hesselman cleared 62 in the high jump for a third place finish.
Davis noted most meets do not include the 2,000 meter steeplechase simply because there is normally not enough room for the event. Any possible lack of experience, however, didnt stop Lakewoods Miles Rossow from finishing third at Bellingham with a time of 6:55.23.
