Opening act strong for Menzel Lake
The first night of Arlington Recreational League softball went off as a hit July 11.
The eight-team league will have games at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. each Wednesday at Twin Rivers Park for the next two months. The fast-paced, high-scoring league got underway with Team Menzel Lake taking on Team Busted and Bruised.
Busted and Bruised got on the scoreboard first. Kevin Willard drew a bases-loaded walk, which due to league rules allowed two runners to score before Phil Johnson came through with an RBI double of his own.
Trailing 3-0, Menzel Lake battled back in the top half of the second inning. Toni Hawthorn led off with a single and moved to second base on a Ken Klein base knock. Ladd Lanz doubled them both home then scored on a Stacie Klein single. Ron Klein singled to score Stacie. RBI from Lisa Head and Bob Bergley topped off the offensive onslaught and put Menzel Lake in front 6-3.
Busted and Bruised came right back in the bottom of the inning to score four runs of their own. The big hit came off the bat of Phil Johnson, who ripped a home run to deep centerfield. Johnson chugged around the bases in a hurry and scored standing up. The blast put Busted and Bruised back in front 7-6.
Menzel Lake turned the tables again however after Ron and Stacie Klein both singled setting up a two RBI double from Bob Bergley. Brandi Bergley singled home Bob and then Steve Baker clubbed a towering home run to right center. Five more runs crossed the plate in all as Menzel took back the lead 11-7.
Busted and Bruised kept inching closer as the game went on. In the fifth inning they turned a Jamie Dicey single into another run. Dicey scored on a Kevin Willard double to put Busted and Bruised down 11-8. Willard then got a bit greedy and tried to stretch his double into a triple, but was promptly thrown out at third base by an alert Menzel outfielder.
Still trailing 11-8 in the seventh inning, Busted an Bruised got their final run as Tawnya Hansen scored on a Terry Page double. At 11-9, Busted and Bruised would get no closer and Team Menzel tacked on an insurance run to win 12-9.
