Scholarships to keep an eye on

You might not know this, but athletes cant apply for athletic scholarships, they have to be earned on the field. If a company, foundation or organization likes a kids statistics and style, odds are he or she will be on the short list. Some of the more notable athletic scholarships in this region are:

The Kendall Shauer Memorial Scholarship
Scholar Athlete of the Year
Brad Baunsgard Baseball Memorial Scholarship

All other scholarships are awarded based on grade point average, essays, school activities and more. And these ones can be applied for. Below are some of those that athletes and nonathletes can go for, as well as some Web sites where students can discover the millions of dollars that are available through scholarships. Students are encouraged to speak with their respective counselors to learn more about scholarship opportunities.

The Washington State Council of Fire Fighters Benevolent Fund
13 $1,000 scholarships, six $500 scholarships.

Rotary Club of Arlington
$1,500 scholarship to a senior from Darrington, Lakewood and Arlington high schools. This year, Rotary may award a $20,000, four-year scholarship ($5,000 a year) to a student from any of those schools who meets the clubs criteria which includes: 1) showing that they have a definite ability to succeed in their future path and 2) the financial help will help change their life (for instance, their inability to go to a four-year college vs. a community college). 360-653-2576.

Kiwanis Club of Arlington averages $7,500 in scholarship money for area high school seniors. Money is raised at its annual auction during the Arlington Festival. Contact the club at: 360-653-5110.
