Darrington returns to state

With a 52-33 win over Seattle Lutheran, Darrington earned a trip to the state tournament.
When the Loggers played a district rematch against Life Christian the following night, it was for a chance to improve their seeding.
In both games, Darrington outscored its opponent for four quarters, earning a three-seed out of Chief Leschi High in Puyallup.
Against Seattle Lutheran Feb. 22, Darrington ran out to a 15-6 first quarter and played a full 32 minutes. That night, Derek Green and Mike Parris had 11 points each, joined by junior Corey Hoveskelands 10 to lead the Loggers to consecutive state appearances. With a combined 43 points, seniors Mark Jones and Justin ODell and Hoveskeland led Darrington to the win over Life Christian.
The beauty of our team is we have different people every night that make a difference, said Darrington coach Jeff Bryson. It always seems to be somebody different. Weve had seven different leading scorers this year, which is pretty amazing, really.
The team relied on playing a strong defense against their opponents. Against Seattle Lutheran, the Loggers held the Saints to just 11 first-half points.
We played a very consistent defense, our defense held them down, Bryson explained. We didnt allow them to make any runs. Usually in basketball youll get a run or two, a team can weather the storm, but we didnt let them.
Darrington beat Life Christian by an even wider 54-39 margin than when they met in the second round of districts. Darrington won that game 53-46 a week earlier.
While Darrington endured two-and-a-half hour long rides to Puyallup, the team will travel even farther to face their next opponent.
Darrington will face Northwest Christian of Lacey in their tournament opener Feb. 27 in Spokane.
