M-P swimmers top Kamiak

MARYSVILLE — The Tomahawk swim team squeaked by the visiting Kamiak squad in a Sept. 23 meet that came down to the last event of the night.

Freshman Kendall Vincelette became the first Marysville swimmer to qualify for the state meet with a two-second improvement in her 100 butterfly from the week before. Vincelette’s 1:00.79 was good for a win in the event and helped the Tomahawks to evenly split event victories with the Knights.

Senior Kami Girard gave M-P two more wins in the individual events, swimming the night’s speediest 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and both for in district-qualifying times. Sophomore Jewel LeValley was also an event winner and district qualifier with her 5:34.59 time in the 500 freestyle.

Marysville’s two other wins bookended the night — by about one-third of a second, the 200 medley relay of Melody Travis, Girard, LeValley and Vincelette beat Kamiak in the opening varsity event. The girls also closed out the meet with a critical 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay to edge Kamiak 96-90 in their second dual meet of the season. LeValley, Megan Shoemaker, Girard and Vincelette swam the winning 400 relay while Emily Reinig, Leah Gordon, Karoline Schaufler and Melinda Blomberg took second place.

Only M-P, Snohomish and Jackson have stayed perfect through the early non-conference schedule. The Tomahawks will host Snohomish Oct. 9 and visit the Timberwolves a week later.
