Lakewood handed homecoming loss against Granite Falls
LAKEWOOD — Overall, it was not one of the best Lakewood homecoming football games in recent years.
Lakewood High School’s 2008 Homecoming week came to a close with a disappointing loss by the football team Oct. 3 to the Tigers of Granite Falls 30-15.
The rain, wind, and bitter cold didn’t stop fans from coming, but did quiet them down.
The Cougars of Lakewood (1-2 league, 1-4 overall) weren’t going to have the weather affect them after their come from behind victory over King’s High School last week. Unfortunately Granite Falls (2-1 league, 3-2 overall) quickly scored in the first half by a 23-yard touchdown run. The Cougars were hoping to strike back but saw the lead grow to 16-0 toward the end of the first half. Luckily, Lakewood scored on a 36-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Justin Lane, to senior Andrew Campbell before the first half was at a close. Lane, who was out due to an injury last game, was held to 10-for-23 passing for 98 yards. Overall, Lakewood had 130 total yards of offense.
Once the second half started, it was certain Granite Falls was in control. They scored again in the third quarter from a 10-yard run by Dylan Wold and again in the fourth off another 10-yard run by Brandon Brown. The Tigers would finish the game with 488 rushing yards. Toward the end of the game, Lakewood began to make a comeback with a 52-yard touchdown run by senior Saul Velasco. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to lead the Cougars out of this one.
After the game Velasco said, “Defensively we could’ve hit harder. There weren’t many positives in this game. I thought we could’ve done better. We didn’t really come with the intensity as the last game.”
The Cougars travel to Everett, to play the Wildcats of Archbishop Murphy Oct. 10.
