Arlington falls short in tiebreaker set

SNOHOMISH — Arlington volleyball already has a league win under their belt this season — a 3-2 win over Cascade — but as they continue to build up the program, there are heartbreaking losses along the way.

One such loss happened as the Eagles visited Snohomish. After trailing for two games, the Arlington girls rallied to win two of their own and force a tie-breaking fifth set. It was there Snohomish cemented their win.

Arlington was defeated 13-25, 16-25, 25-13, 25-20, 12-15.

While point swings are common to the sport, Snohomish enjoyed big swings in their first two wins. They pulled away from an 8-8 tie, ensuring Arlington wouldn’t get close again. In game two, Arlington pulled within two points after trailing by as many as nine before the Panthers went on another scoring streak that secured the second win.

The momentum swung the other way early in game three. Arlington scored the first four points and 15 of the first 20 as kills came from a concerted Arlington team effort. The third and fourth games were probably lead Arlington hitter Bree Covey’s most prolific, en route to 14 kills for the night. Covey and sophomore middle hitter Kenzie Jorgenson added a strong block late in the game as well, with key points on defense to stay competitive in game five.

Coach Cari Britt said she was pleased the girls’ execution of the defensive game.

“We caused a lot of hitting problems for the other team because of our defense,” she said.

Senior Casey Swinney added 10 kills, while setter Kelsey Czaban had 21 assists and Marissa Elgarico had 11 digs.
