7 of 17 local wrestlers place at state

TACOMA – Marysville-Pilchuck teammates Cole Daurie and Joe Lawrence are about as far apart as can be when it comes to wrestling, with Daurie at 106 pounds and Lawrence at 285.

But they have one thing in common – they both placed third in state at the 2018 Mat Classic XXX High School wrestling championships Feb. 16-17 at the Tacoma Dome.

Seven of our 17 locals who competed came home with honors

For M-P, Isaiah Galindo and Cayden White both had fifth-place state finishes.

And placing seventh were Cassidy O’Hara and John Seth of Lakewood and Trey Padgett of Marysville Getchell.

Daurie won his first two matches, one by fall in 1:47 and the next a 7-5 decision. But he lost by pin in the semifinals in 3:20. Dropping into the loser’s bracket he won his first match 9-7 and then his match to take third at state 4-2.

Lawrence pinned his first opponent in 3:52 then won his next match 4-3. In the semifinals he lost 3-1 to the eventual state champion. Knocked into the other bracket, he won 10-3 then took third place with a 6-3 overtime victory.

Padgett, at 138 pounds, won his first match 5-3, but then was pinned in the second round in 5:33. He then won 14-0 before losing 7-3.

Galindo, wrestling in that same weight class, won his first two matches, 8-3 and a pin in 5:45. But he lost 8-1 in the semifinal. He then lost 4-2 but he went on to pin his next opponent in 4:29 to place fifth. Padgett went on to place seventh beating his next foe 9-0.

At 170 pounds, Cayden White won his first match 14-6, but lost 3-0 in the quarterfinals. He pinned his next opponent in 4:37 then was pinned in just 42 seconds in the next round. However, he won his next match 6-4 to place fifth in state.

Will Rush of Arlington won his first match at state 10-8, but then lost 7-5. He then fell 5-0 and was eliminated at 132 pounds.

At 152, Sam Rush of Arlington was pinned in 1:33 in round 1, then won by pin in the next round in 1:57. He lost his last match 7-0.

Devin Fahlman was pinned in his first match as well in that weight class in 3:02. He won his second match by fall in 2:20, but then was pinned in his last match in 2:51.

At 120 pounds, Austin Davis of M-P was pinned in 2:20. He also was pinned in his next match in 4:19.

At 285 pounds, Lawrence’s teammate Jeff Roullier also competed at that weight class. He lost his first match by pin in 2:25. He then was pinned in 23 seconds in the next match to be eliminated.

For Lakewood, Seth lost 8-6 in first round, but won two matches coming up through the loser’s bracket, by pin in 2:53 and 5-3 before losing by pin to the eventual fourth-place finisher. But then he won 6-2 to place seventh.

At 152 pounds, Kevin Stokes was pinned in 5:17, but then pinned his next foe in 3:05. He was knocked out of the tournament with a 6-1 loss. Camden Bach, in the 160-pound weight class, lost by pin in 3:05 in the first round and 6-1 in the second.

In girls wrestling, O’Hara of Lakewood was pinned in 5:13. She won her next match 3-0, and the next round 9-0 before falling 11-2. She ended up seventh in state with a 4-2 win in her last match.

In that same weight class, Tailer Cochran of Arlington was pinned in 51 seconds in the first round, and lost 9-5 in the second round.

Lakewood’s Olivia Poulton competed at 140 pounds. After losing 11-2 she won a second-round match by pin in 3:15. She was eliminated in the next round 6-5.

Also for Arlington, Vivian Potong lost her first two matches, being pinned in 3:35 in round one and barely losing 6-5 in round two.
