After coming back, MG lets game slip away (slide show)

MARYSVILLE – After a valiant comeback, Marysville Getchell let one slip away.

The high school’s boys’ basketball team trailed 32-17 midway through the third quarter against Lake Stevens Monday night.

But after Lul Williams, a 6-foot-6 junior, scored a put-back shot after an offensive rebound the Chargers went on a run, pulling to within 42-40 in the middle of the fourth period.

Defense keyed the run. Freshman Malakhi Knight stole the ball twice and went in for layups, and when senior Ian Roskelley hit a 3-pointer the Chargers pulled within 33-28 near the end of the period. Sophomore Ethan Jackson sparked the Chargers to start the fourth with two quick buckets and when Roskelley scored inside it was 37-24 with 5:50 left in the game.

Knight and Roskelley each hit 3’s to bring the home team within two points within a little less than four minutes left.

But MG did not score the rest of the way, handing the Vikings their first win of the season 50-43. Turnovers led to the demise of the Chargers down the stretch. They were without their top two ball-handlers as sophomore Cameron Stordahl was injured early in the third quarter and senior Travis Barnes was not at the game. Junior Thomas McCormick also was injured in the game.

MG dropped to 2-5.

Knight led MG with 15 points, followed by Roskelley with 9, Williams with 8, Jackson and Dylan Rice each with 4, and Stordahl with 3.

They play at Squalicum Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. and South Whidbey at home Friday at 7:15 p.m.
