Arlington’s new lacrosse program seeks players

ARLINGTON – Lacrosse is starting up in Arlington this year and is looking for players from Lakewood and Marysville to join in.

The inaugural season will run from January through May 2019. Arlington lacrosse is open to boys from kindergarten through eighth grade. Older boys will play on the high school-age team regardless of experience. Garrett Goshorn is the head coach for the high-school aged team. He played for Stanwood’s club then went on to play at Western Washington University. He now plays semi-professional lacrosse for the Tacoma Express.

Arlington lacrosse will be holding a free learn-to-play session for all ages Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club. Grades K-2 is from 9-10 a.m. with the other groups learning in two-hour sessions until 6 p.m. The other grade groups are 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12.

Another session will take place Aug. 27 at the same times and place.

There is also a Skyhawks lacrosse camp being held at Jennings Memorial Park in Marysville Aug. 20-24.

Cindy Slavick, a board member of Arlington Lacrosse, said, “Unfortunately we do not have enough coaches to launch a girls’ program, so girls will continue to play either in Stanwood or Everett, depending on where they live.” Slavick’s son Will, who is going to be a freshman, has been playing since the third grade. “For six years we’ve been head deep in this sport,” she said Tuesday, adding even though they live in Marysville, he will be going to Arlington High School. Billy Shores, president of Arlington Lacrosse, said the group is a non-profit 501c3 with eight board members, a full coaching staff, many volunteers and a lot of community support. He and his wife, Katie, who is the secretary, are the ones who got the effort going. Instead of being governed by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association, the club sport is governed by the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association.
