2 locals win state track titles

Sidney Trinidad of Arlington and Gerrit VanBeek of Grace Academy in Marysville are our only local state champions.

Trinidad was the only local who won a title at the State 3A Track Championships at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma over the weekend.

There were a few others who placed, but Trinidad won the 100 hurdles in 14.6 seconds to take the crown.

She came close to winning another title in the 300 hurdles. She was second in 43.78 seconds. Leahi Manthei of Gig Harbor won in 43.59.

Meanwhile, Trina Davis of Marysville-Pilchuck placed second, and Juliette Williams of Arlington third in the 100-meter dash. Aisha Watt of Seattle Prep was first in 12.18, with Davis following at 12.2 and Williams next at 12.25.

Trinidad and Williams were part of the fifth-place 4×400 relay team, along with Kelsey Mutton and Jensyn Smith. Their time was 4 minutes 2.59 seconds, about four seconds behind the winners.

Arlington almost had another state champion, but Gabriel Green ended up second in the javelin. His toss was 182 feet, 9 inches. Ben Broselle of Ferndale, won with a 183-10.

The other local state placers were Kevin Mullin of Arlington, who was sixth in the 3200 meters with his time of 9 minutes, 30.8 seconds; and Gregory Panther of Marysville Getchell, placing seventh in the 800 meters with his time of 1 minute, 58.64 seconds.

In the 2A meet, also at Mount Tahoma, Bethany Fisher of Lakewood stood out, placing third in the 300 hurdles in 45.51 seconds and eighth in the 100 hurdles in 16.33 seconds.

Yareli Ochoa of Lakewood was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5-foot-2 inches. Sarah Retter of Woodland won with a leap of 5-4.

For the boys, Brock Schubert of Lakewood placed eighth with his toss of 168 feet, 10 inches in the javelin.

At the state 1B meet at Eastern Washington University Saturday, VanBeek showed he is one of the fastest sprinters in the state at any level. VanBeek placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and won the 400-meter race.

His time in the 400 was 49.95 seconds. He was second to Mike Washington of Lummi in the other two races. His time in the 100 was 11.58 seconds, and it was 22.74 in the 200.

VanBeek also anchored Grace’s 4×100 team that placed third with a time of 44.8 seconds. Also on that relay team were Colby Christison, Ethan Hess and Caleb Sanders.

Sanders also medaled in the long jump, placing third with a leap of 19 feet, 7.75 inches.

VanBeek led the Grace boys to a fifth-place finish in the team competition with 42 points. Mount Vernon Christian won with 118.

Meanwhile, in tennis, Layla Garduno-Cravioto of Arlington worked hard to get to state, but didn’t last long once she got there.

Garduno-Cravioto lost in Friday’s first round 6-0, 6-0 to Izabella Bilecova of North Thurston.
