Ex-Arlington star NCAA pitcher of week

Times and Herald reports

ARLINGTON – The NCAA pitcher of the week is Arlington High School graduate Ronnie Ladines. “That’s all Division 1 pitchers,” her mom, Kathy, said Tuesday.

It would be hard to argue against her daughter winning the honor, as Ronnie pitched a perfect game Saturday. Pitching for Kent State University, Ronnie blanked the Buffalo Bulls 10-0 in the second game of a doubleheader in New York.

Ronnie, a senior even though she just graduated from Arlington in 2014, retired all 15 batters she faced, striking out four, to record just the third perfect game in her school’s history.

This season on the mound Ronnie, Kent State’s ace pitcher, is 13-13 with a 2.15 earned run average, striking out 158 in 186 innings. Even though they are in the Mid-American Conference, Kathy said the Golden Flashes play many of the Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference teams, including Oregon, Cal and Alabama, along with Michigan of the Big-10 four times.

Even though she had the perfect game, Ronnie might have done even more damage at the plate.

In the five-inning second game, she blasted a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie.

It was her second homer of the day, as she also went deep in Kent State’s 11-1 victory in the first game.

At the plate she’s batting .263 with seven homers and 32 RBI in 45 games.

Ronnie, who is majoring in pre-physical therapy, has had an outstanding career at Kent State, being named MAC East Pitcher of the Week five times this year and four last year.

She hit .314 last year and posted a 23-10 record, making first team All-MAC. She was 12-6 as a sophomore. In 2014 she made the MAC All-Freshman Team, with a 7-6 record. Prior to college, she went 10-3 with 183 strikeouts and a 1.49 ERA while batting .533 during her junior year at Arlington.
