LAKEWOOD – The Lakewood varsity cross country team went to Pasadena, Calif., and competed Friday night, assistant coach Ariel Jensen said.

Leading the Cougar girls were Callie Buchanan and Madi Howe with times of 20:43 and 20:48. Holly Riley ran a 21:32, Alexa Daily a 22:26 in her first high school race, Jaydee Yargus traversed the three-mile course in 22:28, Johanna Schmidt ran a 23:52 and Torrie Blackwood a 23:55. They finished 19th overall.

For the boys, the top Cougar finisher was Alex Jensen, finishing 59th with a time of 16 minutes and 30 seconds. Sophomore Gabe Hatch was right behind in 16:59, Mario Barletta ran a personal record in 17:26, Jesse Stoddard finished in 17:29, freshman Jarron Ransford ran a 17:46, Ben Schmidt a 18:16 and Joey Heisley an 18:38, moving up 34 places in the second half of the race.

The Cougars will run at Lake Padden Wednesday before going to South Whidbey Saturday.

In soccer, the Lakewood girls team has three 1-1 ties in three games, after fighting to a draw against Granite Falls over the weekend.

The Cougars trailed until Jaylene Priebe-Garcia scored off a free kick in the final four minutes of the game. The free kick was awarded by Iliana Ramirez, who stood her ground, and was fouled outside the box. Jaylene, the center-back, cracked it over the wall of players set up by Granite Falls. The ball hit the top cross bar and bounced in.

Goalie Hailey Kohler made four saves, including one in the final seconds of the game.

Along with those three, Shay Miller, Kiana Oos, Cassidy O’hara, Angela McDonald and Kloey Simmons played the entire game because of injuries to other Cougar players, coach Nick Anderson said.

MARYSVILLE – Mariner didn’t know what hit them.

Marysville-Pilchuck’s boys tennis team romped over the visiting squad Monday 7-0.

What made the loss even more embarrassing for Mariner was they were outscored in the games 84-12, not winning a single set. In only three sets did they even win two games. In five sets they were blanked, and in six others they only won one game.

In singles 1-4, winners for the Tommies were Connor Peterson, Treven Southard, Aaron Kalab and Kellen Richey.

In doubles 1-3, winners for M-P were Trae Tingelstad-Carson Asper, Jake Sulya-Brady Phelps and Chris Hackmann-Alex Nyblod.
