Local athletes excel at state track meets in Tacoma

TACOMA – Bianca Acuario of Marysville-Pilchuck placed third at state in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet in the 3A competition Friday at Mount Tahoma High School.

Two Lakewood High School students also stood out in today’s early finals in the 2A division.

Sophomore Yareli Ochoa was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, and Paige Shimkus was sixth in the javelin with a toss of 116 feet, 3 inches.

Many other local athletes competed in prelimnary heats May 27.

Cruz Griffin of Lakewood was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.15 seconds. Teammate Tyler Courtney was right behind him, placing fifth in 11.3.

Kelson Brewer was fourth overall in the 300-meter hurdles, with a clocking of 40.52.

Lakewood’s 4 by 100 relay team finished eighth with a time of 43.89. On that squad were Courtney, Brewer, Griffin and George Topance.

Cordell Cummings finished 10th in the 300-meter hurdles for Arlington with a 40.51 clocking.

Anthony Dill was 12th in the 100 meters with his time of 11.36.

Ochoa was 13th in the 100-meter dash in her time of 13.37.

Arlington’s 4 by 100 relay team was 13th in their time of 43.79 seconds. Running for the Eagles were Cummings, Dill, Ryley Nelson and Donavan Sellgren.

Placing 15th through 17th in the 100 meters were Green in 13.05, Trina Davis of Marysville-Pilchuck in 13.06 and Juliette Williams of Arlington in 13.08.

Many others are scheduled to compete today:

•From Arlington: Nelson in the long jump; Gabriel Green in the javelin; Dill in the 200; Cummings in the 110 hurdles; Sydney Trinidad in the 100 hurdles, who had the best time going in at 15.19 seconds; and the 4 by 100 relay team of Trinidad, Danielle Baker, Mckenna Landry and Juliette Williams.

•From Lakewood: Megan Fenton in the discuss; Griffin in the 200;

•From Marysville Getchell: Green in the 200.

•From Marysville-Pilchuck: The 4 by 100 girls relay team of Acuario, Gabriella Crenshaw, Catrina Wright and Skyleen Inthathirath.
