Moms play Powder Puff football game to raise money for kids’ league

MARYSVILLE – It’s one thing to support your kids who play sports.

We’ve all heard of soccer moms, for instance.

But these moms don’t just take their kids to games – they play the game themselves.

And it’s not a low-contact game. They get all the bumps and bruises playing the collision game of football.

These moms live in Marysville and Lakewood, and they will be playing their Annual Powder Puff Game June 30 at 7 p.m. at Quil Ceda Stadium at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Money raised from the event goes to keep the costs down for players in the league. Funds raised will help buy sports equipment, cover insurance costs and pay for referee and other league fees.

Last year, about 3,000 people attended. Cost is $5 a ticket or $10 for up to a family of six. The two teams split the cost of renting the stadium and insurance, but take in separate ticket sales on each side of the stadium. Each team also has its own concession stand.

The game pits mothers of players and cheerleaders of both the Marysville Youth Football League and the Lakewood Youth Football Athletic Association will take the field in full gear under the Friday night lights.

Although it is flag football, the Marysville “Toma-mamas” and Lakewood “Cougar Mamas” play a physical game. The teams have spent three months practicing.
