Thursday sports roundup: MG girls beat MLT in 5 tough sets

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

MARYSVILLE – Marysville Getchell’s girls volleyball team gutted out a tough five-set win over Mountlake Terrace Thursday night.

The Hawks took the first game 25-21, and the Chargers answered with back-to-back 25-20 wins before the Hawks took the fourth game 25-19 to force the fifth and deciding game.

MG did not disappoint the home crowd, winning 15-12.

The Chargers were led by senior setter Sydney Norton’s 32 assists, while fellow senior Mikail Montez recorded eight kills and two blocks. Kelsey Kolling added six aces and four kills for the home team while Kerragyn Heacock had 10 kills.

ARLINGTON – The Arlington Eagles girls volleyball team defeated Cedarcrest in three games Thursday at home.

Arlington beat the Red Wolves 25-18, 25-20 and 25-12. Arlington’s outside hitters Arianna Bilby and Reese Talbot accounted for 15 kills, with Sarah Mekelberg adding three.

They were set up by Caroline Diemer, who finished with 20 assists.

MARYSVILLE – Marysville-Pilchuck girls volleyball team did not fair as well, falling to Lynnwood 3-1.

M-P took the first game, before losing the next three. The Tomahawks received 10 kills and two blocks from Miriah Summers. Ivy Engerg added nine kills. Jenna Olson led the defense with 15 digs.

BOYS TENNIS

EVERETT – Arlington beat the hometown Seagulls 5-2 Thursday.

Winners for the Eagles were Taras McCurdie, Tomas Ramirez and Jacob Bolopue in singles. Bolopue had the toughest match, winning 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. In doubles, the teams of Ben Spores-Ben Nicholas and Colby King-Toby Johnson won for Arlington.

MARYSVILLE – The Marysville Getchell boys tennis team fell to Oak Harbor 5-2 Thursday.

At No. 4 singles, Bob Green won 6-3, 6-3. Colby Wagstaff lost a tough match at No.3 3 singles losing 6-4, then winning 6-4, but then falling 6-0 in the third set.

In doubles, MG won at No.1 with the team of Walker Braillard-Luke Olason 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. At No. 3, Ian Crosby-Collin Black took their match to three sets before losing.

GIRLS SOCCER

MARYSVILLE – Veronika Taylor scored a goal in the second half, leading Marysville-Pilchuck to a 1-1 draw against Lynnwood Thursday.

Neither team scored in two overtimes.

M-P coach Paul Bartley said it was a battle.

”Both teams were down a couple players and as it went on it was kind of a war,” he said.
