Marysville-Pilchuck had a surprisingly easy win at Arlington Tuesday night, considering both teams are among the leaders in the Wesco North.

The Tommies shocking 13-0 start probably had something to do with that.

MPHS held that advantage through the first period and expanded on it in the second to lead 38-23 at the half. If there was any question, the Tomahawks outscored the home team 18-7 in the third. Sophomore guard Luke Dobler led the charge that quarter with two 3’s, along with another bucket. Junior wing RaeQuan Battle brought the crowd to its feet when he followed up on a missed shot with a slam dunk. Battle led the winners with 20 points.

The Eagles outscored M-P 21-11 in the final quarter, but it was too little too late.

M-P improved to 13-3 and Arlington fell to 11-6.

Sophomore wing Aaron Kaleb also scored 20, Dobler added 11, senior guard Josiah Gould 10 and senior wing Kobe Baumann 6.

For Arlington, junior guard Anthony Whitis and 6-foot-9 sophomore Will Abram scored 11 points each. Senior wing Jaren Cary added 10. Other scorers: Griffin Gardoski 5; Josh Gutierrez and Campbell Hudson 3 each; and Cooper Cummings, Dele Aribibola, Max Smith and Michael Tsoukalas 2 apiece.

Elsewhere

In other boys basketball games Tuesday, senior guard Kaleb Duitsman led a trio of Lakewood scorers in double figures with 17 points as the Cougars improved to 12-5 with a win over Sehome. Alex Coleman added 14 points, and Michai Harris tacked on 13 for Lakewood.

Paul Shay Jr. scored a team-high 16 points leading Tulalip Heritage to a win over Grace Academy. Josh Miranda had 12 points and Rodney Barber added 11 for the Hawks, who are 16-2. Grace Academy, which is 8-7, was led by Isaac Impola’s 24 points.

In girls basketball, Lakewood fell flat in the second half as the Cougars lost to hosting Sehome in a Northwest Conference matchup.

After allowing just 18 points in the first half, Lakewood, which dropped to 7-10, gave up 16 points in each of the final two periods. Jelly Perry and Emily Senyitko scored 14 points apiece to lead the Cougars.

Also, Deandra Grant and Keryn Parks each scored 16 points to help Tulalip Heritage stay undefeated in Northwest 1B play with a home victory over Grace Academy.

Krislyn Parks added 12 points for the Hawks (13-4 overall, 10-0 Northwest 1B). Heidi Impola led Grace with 16.

In wrestling, M-P’s Baily Alvis won 17-9 over Dayne Tuohimaa and that major decision in the last match allowed the Tomahawks to edge Everett 34-33.

M-P had some really fast pins. At 106 pounds, Cole Daurie pinned Austin Emery in 30 seconds; 145—Isaiah Galindo pinned Hunter Alvarez in 45 seconds; 170—Cayden White pinned Skylar O’Donahue in 27 seconds; and at 285—Joe Lawerence pinned Aurick Martinez 1:24.

Everett had a couple of pins. At 182—Victor Montiel pinned P.J. Galindo 5:27; and at 220—Christian Balmer pinned Adam Holston 3:22.

The Eagles also won close decisions: At 113—Fernie Vasquezdec edged Tanner Lauzon 9-6; at 132—Stephan Erosa dec. Kyle Tubbs 2-0; and at 195—Krys DuPree dec. Ikaika Naweli 1-0.

The two other Everett wins were at 120— Daniel Ramirezdec blanked Austin Davis 7-0; and at 160—Lester Howard dec. Mauro Bejar 10-3.

M-P’s other wins were at 126—Ryan Arboleda by disqualification; and at 152—Devin Fahlman by injury default.

Marysville Getchell lost a heart-breaker to Snohomish in wrestling 40-32. Specific match results were unavailable.

In swimming, MG and M-P both won over Oak Harbor, 96-83 and 87-83. Individual results were also unavailable there.

Last week, some strategy paid off big time for the Arlington wrestling team.

Eagle freshman Connor Stockman usually wrestles at 195 pounds. But against Everett that would have put him up against senior Christian Balmer, one of their best wrestlers.

So, Arlington moved Stockman to a heavier weight class, 220 pounds, to take on Seagull Wyatt Tuohimaa, a junior who is not as highly ranked as Balmer.

That strategy paid off as Stockman pinned Tuohimaa in one minute, 56 seconds.

So while Balmer won by forfeit for six points, Stockman got those six points right back with the pin.

That move was key to the home team’s 37-25 overall victory.

Three other Eagles won by fall. Junior Kristian Fairbanks pinned Lester Howard in 1:12 at 170 pounds, senior Colby Wammack pinned Christian DeGuzman in 1:28 at 152 pounds, and senior Will Rush pinned Ryan Arboleda in 2:59 at 132 pounds.

Winning for Arlington with a major decision was Gavin Howell over Dayne Tuohimaa 11-3 at 145 pounds.

Winning by decisions for the Eagles were: Freshman Dorian Tollenaar 9-4 over Jonah Palabrica at 106 pounds; freshman Jack Mackey 7-5 at 113 pounds over Carmen Degregg, a senior; and at 285 pounds sophomore Hayden Strande edged Aurick Martinez 10-8.

Five wrestlers from Arlington came up on the short end of the score.

Junior Levi Wiseman lost a heart-breaker to senior Krys DuPree 2-1 at 182 pounds. At 138 pounds, Eagle senior Brantly Stupey lost 5-2 to Stephan Erosa of Everett. At 126 pounds, junior Brendan Connelly lost to DJ Ramirez 6-2. Seagull Fernie Vasquez at 120 pounds won a major decision 15-4 over freshman Todd Smith. The only Everett pin of the night came when, at 160 pounds, Riley Bennett put junior Sam Rush on his back in 3:14.
