ARLINGTON — Six-foot-three Arlington senior Nathan Aune worked to get his career-first slam dunk Jan 20.
He was able to do it in the video games and eventually in practice but never in an actual game until Jan. 20, when Arlington defeated Everett 59-47 in a conference basketball game.
“I gone up there a couple of times, and I’ve never been successful,” Aune said. “I changed my shoes today, and I saw it, went up for it. It felt good, and it went down.”
He did it in the second quarter, much to Arlington’s home crowd’s approval.
“It was nice to get him a dunk, and he played well,” Arlington coach Nick Brown said. “He’s so athletic. It’s really hard to stay in front of him.”
He also led the Eagles with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
“We like to use our athleticism,” Brown said. “We’re long, tall and fast so we just use that to our advantage.”
But for Aune, it was just a matter of execution of Arlington’s back door play.
“We came out ready to go and jumped out to an early lead,” Aune said. “They came back and made a run, but we battled through it.”
Aune hopes to use his vertical ability in games to come, he said.
“If the opportunity is there, I will try it,” Aune said.
Arlington’s is 2-2 in the league and 10-4 overall.
Next week, Arlington hosts Marysville-Pilchuck Tuesday, Jan. 27, and Oak Harbor Friday, Jan. 30.
“We’re ready for M-P. It was a fun game last time, so we’re excited to get them at home,” Aune said.
