SMOKEY POINT The Euthenics group of North Snohomish County is looking for new members, to join the members they already have in Arlington and Marysville, who support the education of Home Economics.
Arlington resident Carol Jacques, the groups past president and current advisor, explained that euthenics comes from the Greek word, to thrive, and has a 70-year history of promoting Family and Consumer Sciences, most often by sponsoring scholarships and other education programs at colleges and universities.
A group that began by focusing on cleaning up water and ensuring the safety of homes has since expanded in scope to cover food safety and environmental issues of homes. While the organization as a whole has 112 members across Western Washington, its 12-member roster for North Snohomish County could use more members to help raise money for scholarships and to raise awareness of their issues.
While Jacques personal causes include child and senior nutrition and reducing allergens in homes, she said that the group provided $150 last year to each state university that has a family and consumer services program. She elaborated that this money was used to register pre-professionals in FCS programs to attend the Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Fall Conference. Students from Central Washington University, Seattle Pacific University and Washington State University attended the conference in Yakima last October. Jacques noted that the Euthenics 2007 scholarship of $1,500 has been awarded to an FCS student at Seattle Pacific University.
