When a team graduates five seniors, the dynamic can change substantially.
When Arlington fastpitch coach Dan Eng was faced with the same situation, he capitalized on a strong team bond to assemble just an 11-player squad for spring 2008.
I think the team has a lot better chemistry. Theres a toughness to them this year that wasnt there last year, he said after the first week of practice.
Despite the losses to graduation, Arlington returns three all-conference players from last season, including second-team pitcher and junior Christina Rayner. She is joined on the proverbial mound by junior Allie Milless, who doubles as an infielder for the Eagles.
Also earning second-team kudos last season was shortstop Kristen Allen, a junior this season. Arlington returns one of its top bats as well, senior second baseman Kate Nicely.
Despite the relative youth of his veterans, the quartet have played several seasons together for Eng.
The coach is excited about his experience at pitcher, counting it as one of his teams strengths.
Thats going to be our strong point this year, hopefully. As you know, it starts with pitching, he said. Were looking forward to having a lot of close games this year, keep it tight.
Citing the team chemistry as a reason for the short roster fastpitch teams can play nine to 10 players, depending on whether they used a designated hitter Eng said he has seen impressive talent at his tryouts and would consider promoting players to varsity as the season goes on.
Its a small one, but everyone gets a lot of playing time, Eng said. Theyre showing a lot of toughness that makes me really happy.
