MARYSVILLE — Rachel Cundy didn’t know she was winning.
“I couldn’t tell until my coach (Jeff Sowards) told me I was leading around the second mile,” said the Lakewood junior.
At the North County Invitational, boys and girls of each grade run together, creating a hectic scene at Cedarcrest Golf Course Oct. 14.
But Cundy is used to running with boys, as all Cougars practice together.
“I liked it,” she said after crossing the finish line first out of the junior girls with a time of 19:06.86. “I just concentrated on picking off boys in front of me.”
Cougar runners of both sexes did a lot of that at the meet, as they finished second in the boys and fifth in the girls’ standings.
Finishing in the top five for the Cougars were Rachel Sowards, who finished third in the freshman girls race with a time of 20:16 while Michell Darrah was fifth in the freshman boys race with a time of 17:13.
Kris Mugrage posted a time of 16:39.08, earning him fourth place in the junior boys race, while Trent Tresh’s 16:46.05 mark earned him fourth place in the senior boys race.
The Class 2A Lakewood boys team scored 31 points to take second in a field that included teams from the top four classifications. The girls had 40 points.
Arlington earns a pair of sevens
The Eagles boys and girls finished seventh at the invitational. Highlights included a pair of sixth-place finishes, starting with C.J. Taylor, who competed in the girls sophomore race and finished in 19:52.
James Clark, who won the boys junior race in 2009, finished in sixth place of the seniors race with a time of 16:59.38.
